Windows Insider Fastring update tips

Recently, I’ve been on the Windows Insider fast ring, where updates come twice a week. At times, updates would not succeed on first try, but would on second. This gradually got worse and worse, and I found a workaround.

Before restarting for the update to complete, disconnect all external accessories. For me, that was the 2nd monitor and USB accessories. Once I was back at the “as shipped” state, the updates proceeded smoothly.

Of course, as soon as the update was done, I reconneceted all the goodies. I never had a problem with reconnection. I don’t even recall getting any Windows setting-up-a-new-device type messages.

Pro tip – I didn’t realize in advance that I would need my bitlocker password to boot into safe mode.
